Two of the most memorable moments of my life involve Quentin Tarantino. The high point: being able to host a screening for 300 of my friends, and my friends' friends, of "Pulp Fiction" about a month before it opened. The low point: the best seats I have EVER had for a Broadway show (literally front row, center) was for the Quentin Tarantino/Marisa Tomei' thriller "Wait Until Dark." Let me just say that as an actor, Quentin is one hell of a director.
Luckily it's as a director that he has chosen to make his living. The past 2 weeks have seen the deluxe DVD release of Tarantino's body of work. And they certainly don't disappoint. Both "Dogs" and "Fiction" crackle with the type of dialogue every writer wishes he could come up with. It's obvious that all those years working in a video store paid off big time as Tarantino was able to absorb the best things from the films he saw and then use that knowledge to create. Each of these discs are packed with extras, from interviews and trailers to a rare glimpse into the film workshops at the Sundance Film Festival. "Pulp Fiction" is the first DVD I've seen that pretty much rivals its Criterion Laser Disc Set (8 discs worth, mind you) and I hope that other studios follow suit. I mean, like I've said before, this is why DVD's exist! As an added extra, you can choose your favorite bad guy cover when you purchase "Reservoir Dogs," Mr. PINK, Mr. BLONDE, Mr. WHITE and Mr. ORANGE.
And, if you're lucky, you can find the elusive Mr. BROWN cover, which is good old Quentin Tarantino! With the release in the next few weeks of the Tarantino-scripted "True Romance," this fall is certainly becoming Tarantino time!
