I would like to use this weeks edition to rail on something that's been eating at me for some time now. To be accurate, since about October 6th 1988, when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. What's my beef?

Televangelists, brothers.....televangelists!!

Now, these guys have been around for quite some time, and while some of them appear to be genuine, quite a few of them seem to be off the page, so to speak. Normally, this would be a miniscule issue, but when the page is part of the makeup of the Word of God, its error is far-reaching and sadly, negatively impactful.

It wasn't too long ago that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and a slew of others were proclaiming that homosexuality, and yes, the homosexual themselves, were the reason for the Twin Towers attack. Not the terrorists who slaughtered those innocent people, but homosexuals. Not just homosexuals, but AMERICAN homosexuals! Worse yet, it appears homosexuals are responsible for pretty much ALL of our woes, as a whole, as a nation. You don't need to break it down to understand the absurdity of it. I remember quite well my reaction the first time I heard this. Not one of outrage, but of sadness. It's always a sad thing when someone purports to be a conveyor of Jesus's message and then twists scripture to accommodate their own personal value system. For those of you who don't know it, this is not only a slimey thing to do in our culture, it is also slimey from God's perspective. Specific warnings of impending eternal doom are given to ANYONE who purposely alters God's message. Doesn't matter if you minister to people on the street, or live in luster driving your Mercedes into your 57 room home after leaving your million-dollar evangelism job. Truth is truth, and false is false. Plain and simple.

Sometimes I wonder what it must be like to be that righteous. So over and above everyone else, that you can pick and choose the reasons for mans 'problems of the day'. The homosexual is an easy target for these guys. You don't have to look far to find scripture which states that the homosexual lifestyle is "an abomination to the Lord" as taken from the Bible. This should not be insulting to the homosexual as God's intention is for a man to have a mate, and that mate to be female. This is how we were created. He could have made us to be asexual creatures, each with our own internal reproductive system. But He didn't. The important thing to remember here is that we need to look at this from God's perspective, and not our own. Of course, this is not easy to do if you don't BELIEVE in God. Regardless, His intentions for us are spelled out clearly. Not something added or new. Not revised. And as archaic as it may be to today's version of man, it is consistant thru time. What Christians believe as THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD.

So let me inspire you!

When Jesus Christ came on the scene, the target of his dismay and disappointment wasn't the homosexual! It was the false prophets and priests of His day. Those who stood tall above the people in their proclaimed rightousness received the scathing rebuke of Jesus. From what I can see, it was really the only thing that truly pissed Him off. He did not tolerate it in any form. Whether achieving monetary profit by virtue of God's name, of misrepresenting God's message. I'm not saying that Christ agreed with homosexuality. It's obvious thru his teachings that he did not. But did he blame them for the "problems of the day"? That answer is a resounding "NO", He did not! He blamed the priests for their lack of understanding and not truly conveying God's plan.

In fact, He was troubled about three simple things. It's amazing to me that with all the Jesus folk on the tube and radio, I can find possibly 3 who I believe truly convey His message in a way He would like it to be conveyed. What was this message?

To love the Lord unconditionally, to love one another unconditionally, and to forgive one another unconditionally. Sound new and refreshing? I'm sorry, it does, because it's been the principle of Christ's teaching since He walked and talked on earth.

Jesus knew then what He knows now. Man is lost and man is sinful. This is the purpose for his dying on the cross for our sins AND His resurrection. So that thru His suffering, we 'sinners' could be spared, and thru His resurrection, we have redemption. It is a gift from God. You can't earn it, or act in a certain way to attain it. If you could, it wouldn't be a gift. All we have to do is accept it, and forgiveness, along with eternal life, is ours. Unbeknownst to Falwell and Robertson, this includes the homosexual.

It's easy for the high-and-mighty bible thumper to spew outrageous proclamations designed to attack a specific sin. Jesus spoke in specifics, too. In fact, you could say He was speaking directly "to" these self-considered purveyors of truth when Jesus said ...

"What emerges from within a man, that and nothing else is what makes him impure. Wicked designs come from the deep recessess of the heart; acts of fornication (of ANY KIND), theft, murder, adulterous conduct, greed, maliciousness, deceit, sensuality, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, an obtuse spirit. All these evils come from within and render a man impure" Mark 7:20-23

Now lets see....maliciousness, deceit, arrogance, being obtuse. Hey, there's four right off the bat! Falwell and Robertson have a batting average of .333 when it comes to things Christ deems impure. As Jesus cannot be contrary to God, and God is truth, guess that makes THEM impure. At least, by Christ's standard.

The simple truth is this.....when all is said and done and we've pushed the envelope of denial to the end of the drawer and the world has "finally" reached its end, it will be because God has deemed it to be so, and not because a group of people do or don't do something or the other. Sin is sin, and sin is in man. All men. Believers and unbelievers. Especially those who tell you they are free from sin. Be mindful of these people. They are false. There is no such thing as being free from sin. You can have freedom from sin in Christ, but will never be free from sin. Not as long as you walk this earth and wear that skin. No one. Not me, not you, and more to the point, not Falwell, not Robertson, or any other talking head who misrepresents my wonderful Lord and my Savior.

In closing, I want to thank Nolan for his encouragement to speak to this in my column. Something that both of us have always had a problem with is hypocricy, and I just couldn't let this lie. If anyone has any comments or questions, feel free to write me at mdrinne@netscape.net and I'll do my best to answer you.

Till next time, take care and as always, God bless you
Matthew

That said, on a more personal note, even tho I'm not a believer, I agree with what I think Matt is basically trying to say. And yes, I loathe hypocrisy.
I would appreciate it greatly if interested readers take Matt up on his offer and send all religiously-oriented correspondence directly to him at the address provided in his column and do not send it here. Thank you.--Nolan.
