As July begins to turn into August, Hollywood is entering the last phase of summer movies. Next week brings the big screen version of "Dukes of Hazzard." Can't wait. This week we have the latest adaptation of "Top Gun," this time titled "Stealth."
Our story begins when a select group of Navy pilots (Lucas, Biel and Foxx) are chosen to fly the latest secret weapon. After showing their skills they are informed that a fourth member will be joining their team. They are surprised to learn that it's not another pilot but a fully automated airplane. They soon learn that this plane is a lot smarter then intended and when they do the story begins to take off.
"Stealth" is really two movies in one. First you have the "buddy" movie, though instead of two buddies there are three. They consist of the lone, beautiful girl and the two male best buddies. Of course one of the guys is secretly in love with the lone, beautiful girl but can't tell her. The other guy is the wise guy who keeps everyone laughing. Thankfully, the other guy is played by Jamie Foxx who, when he's not winning Academy Awards, is a pretty funny guy. The second part is the best part. This is the action section of our program. Director Cohen, who also helmed "Fast and the Furious" and the first "XXX" is one the best when it comes to action and he doesn't disappoint here. The three leads do a credible job. Third billed Foxx, who completed this film long before he won the Oscar for "Ray" proves a strong screen presence. And extra credit for having "The Right Stuff's" Sam Shepard, who played Chuck Yeager, the original fly boy, as the leader of the special team. The effects are top notch and the last 15 minutes of the film are genuinely thrilling. If the first 105 had been as good, "Stealth" could have been one of the summer's best.
On a scale of zero to four stars, I give "Stealth"
