  • Reader inquiry on Tampa band Avatar/Savatage (and Will Moriaty's response)
  • Reader discusses the Marrero House of Key West

Letters to the EditorWe welcome your feedback.

I was wondering if you could answer a question for me.

I was reading an archive of La Floridiana by William Moriaty and I noticed there was mention of a band formerly known as Avatar that had to change their name to Savatage because of a legal battle.

Was another band using this name?

Someone named Bruce Clifford is claiming to have a band named Avatar in the '80's. He would have been in Florida at this time.

    Can you verify this information?

    Thank you,
    Heather Couillard

    Dear Ms. Couillard:
Thank you for writing to and reading our on-line publication!

I am not certain as to the exact reason behind the name change from Avatar to Savatage, but Wikipedia alludes to possible copyright "issues" in 1983. Please link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savatage#The_Early_Days for more details.

Beyond that, I do not know if the Bruce Clifford, mentioned in your correspondence, brought such a copyright suit against Jon and Criss Oliva (d.b.a. Avatar) at that time. He does have a dynamite site at http://people.tribe.net/mystubenmyspec with an incredible video, circa 1965, of one of my favorite groups of all times, the Kinks.

Enjoy and thanks again for writing.

    William Moriaty
    La Floridiana.

[Re: Will Moriaty's story about the Marrero House of Key West] The kids were raised in Tampa... many died of old age, some died of normal tb sort of things.

Ghost stories sell rooms and tours but her ghost isn't there.

Marrero's wife had friends who helped her after the woman from Cuba came claiming to be his first wife.

His first wife was Louisa, she died...

The Marrero house is pretty, but it was prettier before, not the way it is now. The trees outside are too tall, the owner likes it that way so it provides him shade on his porch.

If Henrietta was going to haunt anyone it would be him.

Thanks for your info on the Marrero house. Not what I was looking for, but still.

    Thank u,

Thank you, Bobbi, for writing! I forwarded your email to column author William Moriaty, but so far, he has not responded. It is a strange story indeed! ---Nolan
