UFL Sets Up
This year, the United Football League will be kicking off it’s “Premiere Season” in October, and playing their championship game a month later during Thanksgiving weekend. The new league will aim their franchises towards cities that have been overlooked by the NFL, but have strong football ties. These cities include Orlando, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and even Monterrey, Mexico. This has been done before though, and has failed to work out numerous times. Orlando has seen countless second-hand football teams and the only one that has survived WAS the Orlando Predators, but they stopped play this year, not because they can’t sell tickets in Orlando, football fans in Orlando love any team you give them, but because their team is apart of a league that cannot get strong in other markets. This year the Arena Football League has folded, and the United Football League will try to start up. To be honest with you, I miss the XFL. People made fun of it because it was owned by Vince McMahon, and it only lasted one year but they had a great concept for markets, team-names, and uniforms. Who doesn’t miss He Hate Me, and the black and red football?
Former WWE/WCW Wrestler Andrew “Test” Martin passed away. My condolences to his family. He’s another in a long list of wrestlers gone to soon. The last wrestler death was Chris Benoit when he murdered his wife and son and then took his own life. The question is: Is there anything to this continual death of wrestlers at young ages? I watched Test growing up and watching the Monday Night Wars, then on RAW. He was a pretty good wrestler and had a good character with good music, and will be missed.
On April 14, if you are lucky enough to goto a Rays game, the Rays will be handing out replicas of their American League Championship rings to the fans. This isn’t the World Series ring, but honest with you, I think if you win the AL, that IS the World Series. Looking back, the Rays-Red Sox series was the greatest post-season series I’ve seen in a while, and the World Series sucked. We were robbed!! That’s okay, we look good this spring, and we will have plenty of chances at it. The Bucs never handed out free replica rings. I guess they’re better than that.
The Bucs are moving their training camp from Walt Disney World back to Tampa at One Buc Place. This is a cost-effective move, that would save the team on transportation costs, plus anyone that’s not from the Bay area that follows that Bucs would bring their money to Tampa, and not Celebration. A good move for Tampa, a bad move for football fans that just happen to be visiting Disney World during camp. Having the Bucs there showed them off to the world. How many football teams practice at frikin’ Disney World? Them practicing there builds a wider fan base. But they are right when you think about it. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers should after all, be practicing in Tampa Bay, but I just think with them training at Disney, it helps build more fans.
