![]() Assistant Editor / Co-moderator: Terence Nuzum Established A.D. 2000, March 19. Now in our eleventh calendar year! Number 537 (Vol. 11, No. 28). This edition is for the week of July 5--11, 2010. Comments Another baby-boomer landmark was reached today as former Beatle Ringo Starr turned 70 years of age. That he's still touring is amazing and I think he looks pretty good for his age.
Of course, it's hard for boomers not to feel absolutely ancient now that one of the members of a band that defined a generation is an advanced senior citizen. But we should also feel grateful that Ringo can make growing old gracefully as a rock n' roller credible.
Had he lived, John Lennon would've turned 70 this October.
The artist formerly known and once again currently known as Prince has announced that the Internet is dead. Well, after reading a little more on the topic, I think he meant as far as distribution of his music goes, what with recent hassles with video and download sites over things like copyrights and royalties.
His new album will be available on CD only, with the only free copies available with purchase of The Daily Mirror. Leave it to Prince to abandon the greatest distribution outlet known to man to return to a diminishing/dying platform (newspapers) to give away his music, the very thing he was struggling to escape from the "dead" internet.
I presume the CD has some incredibly clever piracy-defeat mechanism built in so it doesn't wind up on the internet for free anyway.
Ahem....so, a certain e-zine publisher of your acquaintance and his sports talk colleague get hauled into the office of their place of employment this morning when it was discovered that said colleague and publisher's humble video efforts on YouTube to spoof events that happened at said job were discovered by a higher-up without the same sense of humor as we (actually we were ratted out by some Philistine, so the story goes). After a very strongly-worded written reprimand that included threats of involuntary separation from the company, the computer came on, the videos came down, assurances went out that it was all meant in fun and we talk in code now, 'cuz we're being monitored.
The crisis narrowly averted, the two defendants wish to thank the small fan club who shared a positive experience with the videos, but regret to inform that they are no longer available online in any form. And we love our jobs, we really do.
The three-year-old experiment of having Readers Comments on the homepage is now concluded. While there were many times that constructive conversations took place---and those were always great---more and more, it became a target for trolls, harrassment, link-jumping, and self-promotion. The PCR writers' show of mutual admiration for each other's columns was terrific for morale, but may have led the public into thinking we're a closed society. Nevertheless, I'll miss that kind of exchange because often the writers would offer more information on particular topics. The vote was taken, however, and I lost. So...it's back to the ol' trusty Message Board.
In the coming weeks, the original Lettercol will be making a comeback. It will be open only to PCR writers who wish to share their correspondence. The Lettercol link will be posted on the homepage and all letters will, of course, be viewable by the public. We hope that this will provide a safer and more reliable exhibit of our legitimate exchanges than the sometimes nutty way Readers Comments did.
For the moment, however, a new forum has been started on The Message Board meant solely for commenting on PCR articles. Alternately, you can email your thoughts and comments directly to me (nolan@crazedfanboy.com), or to the PCR staff writers---their emails are listed on their columns' pagebottom copyright notice.
